Arizona vs. Washington Quick React
What a hell of a game. Because I didn't get to watch the game, I'll reserve any skepticism for later. I was able to youtube the interception that they took back for a TD and it makes me sick. Why weren't we running out the clock with our ground game?

The magic bounce
We are supposed to believe that a ball with a downward trajectory somehow managed to strike the bottom sole of the receivers shoe and bounce up and back toward the passer, without striking something else…like the ground.
The replay clearly showed the simultaneous strike of the shoe and the turf, which is what the laws of physics would have required
Just like Rodgers was able to lever off of thin air to lunge 3 yards for a 2 point conversion last week against Oregon State.
If these jerks are not even going to look at the images during replays, we ought to get rid of the charade and speed up the games.
don't forget the first "turnover"
where the receiver takes two steps, while turning around and heads upfield but no longer has control of the ball?
I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused....
That play makes me sick still
UW did nothing to deserve that victory. Arizona completely manhandled them all game long.
The ball clearly hits the turf in the replay. This is going to sting for awhile.
Going forward, I hope this game and the botched call is a rallying point for the team. There are a ton of positives to take out of a third-consecutive tough road trip. Foles looks great. The defense shut down Jake “Hype Machine” Locker. With all the love Locker gets, you’d think he’s won more than 5 college football games — ever. Sonny Dykes had a great gameplan. Arizona’s offensive line is a strength. And the team overall showed that it can go into a tough place to play — at night — and completely dominate a game. This season is far from over Cats fans.
A couple of points...
- UW had a halftime lead…and even if the Polk fumble was held up (which it should have been, he clearly had posession) that’s still a 10-7 (maybe 17-7 worst case) UA lead at the half…hardly a manhandling. 3rd Quarter was a manhandling and embarassing that we couldn’t defend the bubble screen, Fowles is the real deal, but he did have inflated stats from the screen passes.
- Jake Locker’s line could have been more impressive, but 12-23-1int (not his fault) and 3 TD’s and 92 yards rushing with a rushing TD is nothing to scoff at. What makes him so hyped is his game changing ability and leadership, which you all witnessed on his 50-some yard TD scamper and clutch TD pass just before the infamous INT. He was the offense last night, allowing us to hang around long enough to win it.
- Your O line is quite good, your season stats prove it. However, your run game got shut down (77 yards on 30 carries), and Fowles didn’t really need much time as the bubble screen you guys beat us with all night doesn’t rely as heavily on the O line as a standard downfield pass play.
Either way, it was a hell of a game. UW didn’t really deserve to win the way it did, but it happened that way. You can say that the Foster Int. was a fluke, but Stoops managed your last two drives very poorly and you guys had to settle for 4 FG’s. One play does not win a game.
Locker has skill
but you can’t say that his passing line is not his fault — or not the direct result of good defense. He had a poor completion percentage and missed on some big passes.
He can run the ball. But not worthy of all the praise he receives, YET. All the popsickle sucking for is still a bit premature. However, he will likely develop into an amazing quarterback. And likely, very soon. He has the tools. He just hasn’t put it all together yet. Pac-10 fans everywhere but Seattle hope he takes those tools to the NFL a year early.
I think the poor rushing numbers are a product of UW stacking the box (because both safeties were down; UA’s running backs were banged up; UA has ran the ball great all year; and stopping the run was likely UW’s best chance at winning). Injuries are a part of the game, and are no excuse, but I think Dykes changed the play-calling to a heavy pass offense based on that.
Screen plays count just the same as any other passing play. UW’s defense needs to learn how to stop it more than once a game. Other teams will watch that film and exploit that weakness.
You are correct, I think Arizona’s failure to convert TDs in the redzone was the primary reason they lost. Plain and simple. The fluke plays hurt, but would not have mattered if Arizona did not have to settle for so many field goals.
Regardless, the game is over and none of this matters. All I know is I think Arizona is better prepared to take on the rest of the season. The Washington defense has serious holes, and when Locker isn’t clicking, that offense doesn’t move.
52% isn't really a poor percentage
and considering he hit Kearse in the hands (a bad spot I know) on the Int I can say that it’s not all his fault with full confidence. Without those drops he’s hitting 60% for 200 or so yards. He still needs touch on his deep ball, but he’s developed into the best overall QB in the conference, by quite a wide margin.
- 2 years ago he ran for nearly 1000 yards, I’ll direct you here for further evidence. Note: The system Sark has installed ties his hands in the running department.
- We stacked the box and tried to make foles beat us through the air, he did that, sort of. While it counts the same as any other passing play, you and I both know that it’s a super high % pass. UW couldn’t defend it at all, and it inflated Foles #‘s. He didn’t stretch the field, or light it up on long plays like Clausen did to us. It was more bad D than great QB work.
- That said, I think Foles will be the best of the young crop of current Pac-10 QB’s. Him and Luck will battle it out for 1st team all-conference.
- You guys should end up bowling (as should UW) and Stoops might finally be off the hotseat for good.
no complaints...
I agree to a point with Smooty, but being a U Dub girl, GO HUSKIES! ! !
that was absolutely insane what happened. even I (who doesn’t know too terribly much about football) was ready to leave the game, when out of nowhere the ball bounces off the AZ receivers shoe-into the hands of a Husky standing nearby. It was pure insanity!!!!!
4 things happened, not one, in the end.
In the final few minutes, there were a few things that I would point to. The first and third were the completely blown coverages that resulted in touchdowns. They managed Locker and the receivers ALL GAME LONG and with so little time left they… I don’t know. Whether it was a mental mistake, relaxing too early, or what, but those touchdowns were easy and should have never happened.
Speaking of things that should have never happened, what was that final personal foul about? That was a stupid penalty and it made the drive much easier.
The final, fluke inteception was unreal. I was watching on TiVo and, to be honest, it looked valid. But I was surprised that something so strange was reviewed from a better angle. I watched it a couple times, but all the same POV, but were there no other perspectives? No review at all, really?
All in all, I think the game showed us that Foles really can be that good and there were a lot of positives, just not the one that matters the most – the W.
Correction to the third paragraph...
The final, fluke inteception was unreal. I was watching on TiVo and, to be honest, it looked valid. But I was surprised that something so strange was NOT reviewed from a better angle. I watched it a couple times, but all the same POV, but were there no other perspectives? No review at all, really?
Fluky loss -- sometimes it just doesn't bounce your way
The replay was inconclusive — to me anyway. Prior to that though, my one issue was the decision on Locker’s last TD pass to rush three and drop the rest into coverage. On the surface it’s not a bad move, but considering that the four man front had done a great job of keeping Lock contained dropping the extra man did more harm than good.
As soon as they rushed only three, Locker broke contain and broke down the integrity of the coverage. Tsk. Tsk. Sometimes the great challenge for a coordinator is to do nothing; to stay in the base defense when that’s working.
The bubble screen had been working like gangbusters all game, primarily because the Huskies had not been jumping it. On the interception Foster jumped it. Foles did a good job of pulling it down. With the benefit of hindsight, obviously, you’d rather he pulled it down and got what he could get and keep the clock moving. (It was actually a nice play by Dean to move forward and change the angle. Things just didn’t work out.)
