Arizona 34 vs. Iowa 27 Quick React

TUCSON AZ - SEPTEMBER 18: Wide receiver David Douglas #85 of the Arizona Wildcats celebrates with teammate William Wright #19 after Douglas scored on a 5-yard touchdown reception against the Iowa Hawkeyes during the first quarter of the college football game at Arizona Stadium on September 18 2010 in Tucson Arizona. Wow! What a game.  Arizona came out of the gate with a fire we haven't seen in awhile.  The blocked punt and subsequent punch in by Foles connecting with Roberts was a nice start to the game.  It got better when Trevin Wade picked off a tipped pass by Stanzi and scampered 85 yards to the end zone to make it 14-7.  Iowa didn't stay close for long as Cobb took the ensuing kickoff 100 yards to make it 21-7.  Add in a couple of Zendejas field goals and that's the first half.

Star-divide

The second half didn't go as well for the Cats as they kept the play calling aggressive but couldn't put the game away when they had the opportunities.  Bug Wright's muffed punt in the 4th quarter was a crucial mistake and one that big time programs don't make during crunch time.  Stanzi threw two touchdown passes in the second half and Foles had a pick 6 in the fourth quarter. Arizona got the ball back and methodically drove down the field, gaining a huge third down on a one yard run in which Iowa didn't even load up the box.  Bug Wright dropped a pass in the corner of the end zone but Foles went back to him on the very next play, threading the needle to Wright over the middle and leaving only 3:57 left for Iowa to mount a comeback.  Iowa tried but was shut down quickly by the Cats, turning the ball over on downs.

Congrats to Stoops and his staff.  Our defense was incredible all night especially considering the amount of time they were on the field.  Our players looked better and our schemes dominated Iowa's offense.  I guess it's easy when you don't let them run, right?  The second half was not that impressive but give credit to Iowa for attacking our weak spots.  Justin Washington comes up huge with a sack late in the fourth quarter. Elmore and Reed were FREAKING UNSTOPPABLE during the last drive!!!!!!!!!! Arizona ends the game with 4 sacks in a row!!!!!!!!!! (I know, I know, only three counted.)

Our OL was incredible and Adam Grant gets the game ball for giving Foles incredible amounts of time while neutralizing All American Adrian Clayborn all night long.  Foles reciprocated by not making many mistakes and picking apart the Iowa defense, which didn't look very good at all tonight.

Let this be your celebration thread!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow.

How about that defensive line Iowa fans wouldn’t shut up about?

GREAT GAME by the Cats offensive line. Didn’t see much from that D-Line. Best line in college football? Hardly.

After having the ball for only 2:30 in the 1st quarter, Arizona ended the game with the advantage in time of possession. Iowa’s rushing offense we were supposed to fear? Completely stopped.

Great win Cats.

you had 2.1 yards per rush

our d-line intercepted your qb for a TD and we had several sacks…our special teams lost this game….but to the victor goes the spoils.

Victory

You had 29 yards rushing. Twenty. Nine. What about that vaunted rushing attack?

Foles threw for 303 yards, and was sacked once. I thought he was going to get dirty all night? Arizona also spent most of the game without its starting fullback and its best WR, when Tutogi and Criner went down.

Iowa’s entire team lost this game.

Have anything better to do than troll on our celebration thread, trying to marginalize Arizona’s win? Game’s over Stoops.

I thought both teams looked pretty stout

with plenty of big plays made by each side

Iowa had plenty of pass rush once they started to stay at home and play the draw effectively, although it certainly hurt ‘Zona that Criner went out so early. The Hawks D turned us over a couple of times, the Grigsby fumble was huge because if AZ scores then, I think that would have really taken the wind out of Iowa’s sails, instead they marched down and kept the game within reach.

I thought Stanzi showed why they have a love hate relationship with him, he can throw a nice deep ball and he shows the desire to take chances in hopes of the big play. I thought both of the Iowa wideouts did extremely well, but I was pleasantly surprised by how effective the Arizona backers were to take out the TE from the game plan. Later on, the front four started showing more consistency in getting to Stanzi and it certainly started to show in his timing and decision making.

Special teams was also an advantage, although giving up a muff and crappy puntiung most of the night by Crier certainly didn’t help Zona’s cause, the KO TD and the blocked punt and PAT tilted the balance Zona’s way.

I really thought that Iowa would pick us apart with the intermediate passing game, but the effect of the interception and the blocked punt looks like it forced them to modify their game plan.

I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused....

I can’t say it enough. The Iowa fans were great. Classy. I had tons of fun with no nonsense. I just wish some of the Pac-10 teams had similar fans. I’m looking at you, Oregon and ASU.

Couldn’t agree more! Iowa fans were great throughout the pre-game and to the end. A lot of friendly smack talk, but with respect. They travel really well, I was amazed by how many black and gold shirts I saw. Cheers to you Iowa, this was an instant classic.

It hurt to watch at times

But no doubt in my mind that this was a great game. It hurts now but I hope Arizona looks as dominant as they did tonight for the rest of their schedule. Iowa was taken out of their depth early, recovered, and then Foles just took over.

For the last 6 months the talk in blacker and golder parts of the web had been about the potential for the O-line to get beat and/or the special teams coverage. Both kicked our ass last night.

I have the same fashion sense as Tom Arnold.

you guys certainly

exploited some our concerns early and often. well coached, disciplined, physical team.

by no means a clean game either way, plenty of slop… seeminlgy questionable calls both ways (espn = bad at showing these things)

our defense looked worse than it really was, but would have had to have been flawless to keep our offense in it the way the wildcats came out. especially on their last drive.

youve beaten us this time!

on a side note – you may want to get stoops some preemptive medical attn, as shit can happen

best of luck, run the pack ten, and perhaps we’ll see ya in pasadena if youre up for it!
