I'm not a fan of the white helmets.

I like the blue ones.

But who cares – Foles hits Douglas in the back of the endzone for 6! ARIZONA 7, TOLEDO 0

Toledo with the big 18 yard gain over the middle.

Pass was to the middle of the field. Looked like linebacker coverage.

by mattortega on Sep 3, 2010 5:23 PM PDT reply actions

Foles looked very sharp in the first series.

Moved the ball effectively with 5/5, 50+ yards passing, including the strike to Douglas in the back of the endzone.

Arizona goes three and out.

Criner almost had a hell of a reception on the sideline on the play action fake. Just couldn’t haul it in as it was drifting away from him.

Linebackers

It is clear Toledo’s offensive scheme is set to prey on the inexperience of the Arizona linebackers. Picked up a couple big gains but those went nowhere ultimately.

by mattortega on Sep 3, 2010 5:38 PM PDT reply actions

William "Bug" Wright with a strong return.

Takes it from the 10 or so and takes it 35 yards with some nice moves.

by mattortega on Sep 3, 2010 5:38 PM PDT reply actions

Arizona's third series going nowhere.

10 yard loss on the fumble. Draw play for one yard. Then a penalty moves them back even more. WR bubble screen to Criner gets solid yards but brings up 4th down.

End of 1st Quarter

ARIZONA 7, TOLEDO 0

Wildcats looked strong to start the game. Toledo recovered defensively with two strong stands. They’ll have the ball at about their own 30 when the 2nd quarter starts up.

by mattortega on Sep 3, 2010 5:44 PM PDT reply actions

Holding negates huge Toledo pickup.

Toledo backs up into their own territory and brings up 3rd and 22.

by mattortega on Sep 3, 2010 5:55 PM PDT reply actions

Toledo punt pins Arizona at their own 4.

We must get the running game going, especially now that we’re backed up in the shadow of our own endzone.

by mattortega on Sep 3, 2010 5:56 PM PDT reply actions

Just to clarify...

Antolin: 7 yards on 2 carries.
Grigsby: 5 yards on 3 carries.

by mattortega on Sep 3, 2010 5:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Matt Scott came in at QB.

Handed off to Antolin who was almost tackled for a safety.

Any word on why Foles isn't QBing?

You don't seem to want to accept the fact you're dealing with an expert in guerrilla warfare, with a man who's the best, with guns, with knives, with his bare hands. A man who's been trained to ignore pain, ignore weather, to live off the land, to eat things that would make a billy goat puke. In *St. Louis* his job was to dispose of enemy personnel. To kill! Period! Win by attrition. Well, *Steven Jackson* was the best.

No word from the commentators.

Foles was on the sideline with his helmet on. No appearance of injury or anything.

Just wondering if you guys had any inside word

I’m watching from an NFL prospect aspect; I write at Turf Show Times & Mocking the Draft, the SBN communites for the St. Louis Rams and NFL Draft, respectively. I had Foles going 18th overall in my first 2011 mock draft.

Toledo is fired up. Arizona standing around looking at each other.

by mattortega on Sep 3, 2010 6:03 PM PDT reply actions

Toledo pins Arizona with bad field positioning with the punt again.

We’ll see if Foles comes out under center or if Scott returns after the safety.

Offense moving the ball now.

For the folks watching the game at home...

The big question all offseason was about the defense.

The linebackers have shown some inexperience on the field in the first half but Earls made a nice play on the interception that set up Foles’ rushing touchdown.

The front four have looked solid. Toledo only has a couple rush plays for more than a yard or two and 16 yards on the ground all half.

What do you think so far?

by mattortega on Sep 3, 2010 6:44 PM PDT reply actions

From an NFL evaluator aspect

I’m biased, in that I really like Foles’ chances at the next level, but he’s been great tonight. Still hoping to hear why he was held out of the series when Toledo got that safety.
Also, I think Colin Baxter looks legit. He’s held his center spot, and looked especially solid on some second level pushes for Antolin on more than one occasion.
That being said, this is Toledo…

So I have a legitimate question for you. I’ll preface this by saying I have no problem with it whatsoever, but I want to know your thoughts. Up 34-2 in the 4th quarter, how do you feel about the coaches calling pass plays? I personally don’t have any issue with it when you have your backups in, but some people feel like it’s “running the score up”. What do you think about it?

"Running up the score"

Stoops would be getting docked 50 and 75 points in NCAA11 for running up the score on the pass plays.

Maybe just wants to get Scott some reps? I don’t know. I’d love to see more carries for Nwoko right now, personally.

by mattortega on Sep 3, 2010 7:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, like I said I don’t have a problem with it so much if it’s with your 2nd and 3rd string players. Especially since once he got down near the red zone they started running it. It’s a tough situation for the coaches because the live game reps you can get for your backups are so valuable, and having the QB just hand it off over and over with no passes is a wasted opportunity. At the same time you don’t want to look like a douche for running it up. I think they handled that okay.

We had a pretty crazy thread going on addictedtoquack last night from someone accusing Kiffin of being classless for going for 2 after their first touchdown, claiming that since they “knew” they were going to beat Hawaii easily they shouldn’t do that. It got insane. Almost 1900 comments in that thread!

ESPN runs the Ortege Jenkins flip as trivia question

1997, 1998, or 1999?

Over and out
A forward body flip is an amazing feat under any circumstances. Even when performed by an 89-pound gymnast, it’s still awe-inspiring to see a human being start out flat-footed, leap forward and invert themselves, fly around in a full 360 and land with both feet again flat on the ground.

It’s even more amazing when the feat is performed by a 210-pound football player.. That’s why I still flip out when I think about the play that Arizona quarterback Ortege Jenkins made to beat Washington in October of 199X.

It’s fourth-and-goal from Washington nine, Arizona is down 28-24, only seconds remain. With no one open, Jenkins decided to make a run for the goal line with linebacker Lester Towns the only thing in his way. At full speed Jenkins somersaulted in the air and landed on his feet just inches over the goal line. Upset bid squashed. Game over and the most amazing athletic feat I’ve ever seen.
