Washington head coach Lorenzo Romar says he will not suspend the player accused of raping a 16 year-old girl, stating "...at this time, there is no need to address it." It can be assumed that once the player has been formally charged with the crime, swift action will be taken. Until then, it looks as though Abdul Gaddy is the only player not suiting up for the Huskies.

What are your thoughts? How would YOU handle the situation?

What choice does he have?

If he suspends a player, then he’s going to be branded with that label, even if he is never formally charged. If he is charged, then let’s see how the coach handles it.

Thanks for the response. While I understand your point, I wonder if it is acceptable to Coach Romar that his senior player invited a 16 year-old girl over to his apartment, whether or not he did indeed commit a sexual crime? Many would argue that the player should already be suspended for violating team and school rules/code of conduct, and further action should be taken (ie- dismissal from the team) if he is found guilty of the crime.

Valid point.

At the NCAA level of play, it is the responsibility of the coach to enforce standards of conduct and good judgement, not simply punish a player that is proven guilty of a crime.

None of the players have been charged of anything

And who can say whether the story is even true or not? The investigation has been going on for quite some time now and there has been really no announcements of any kind. I just don’t understand why Romar would do anything at this point in time when the police haven’t even officially named anyone.

All valid points (and this is what I initially thought too). However, it still comes back to the fact that whether he did commit this sexual crime or not, he should not have had a 16-year old female at this apartment in the first place. I agree that it is pretty interesting that nothing has come out about this incident thus far. But, it sounds like the girl’s father is about to make it a lot more public than UW wants.

What’s sad is Romar pretending to take this seriously, it seems to me that he’s ignoring it in hopes it goes away. Regardless of the rape charges he as a senior on his team inviting underage sophomore’s in high school over for parties. That’s quite despicable in itself. UW and their fans have done a great job of deflecting but this is a pitiful act that should be punished. Hell, Wazzu suspended Reggie Moore for marijuana possession when he claims it was his roommates in his dorm but since he was the only one there he was charged. At least that’s a valid excuse and he still got suspended. What’s Romar’s excuse? What’s this unnamed players excuse?
