Derek Babiash Profile: Versatile Poway Product Signs

Stay connected for news and updates

Matt Kartozian-US PRESSWIRE

Athletic Derek Babiash played at CIF championship winning Poway, displaying an ability reminiscent of Wildcat defensive backs past.

POSITION: DB

HIGH SCHOOL: Poway

HEIGHT: 6-foot-0

WEIGHT: 170 pounds

STAR RATING: Three

Versatile defensive back Derek Babiash could become a jack-of-all-trades for the Wildcats. Plying his trade at San Diego area powerhouse Poway High, Babiash excelled as one of the region's best defensive players. He is tough in coverage, athletic and packs a wallop on his tackles.

His ability to hit doesn't match his lean frame. He patrols the secondary alert though, and could emerge into a Darrell Brooks type for the Wildcats. But his ability to cover speedy wide receivers would make him too valuable at cornerback to play at free safety.

Another Wildcat past that Babiash could develop into his former All-American Antoine Cason. Babiash has a similar frame, and equally explosive ability to exploit misread routes.

Showing off his talents, Babiash also played some wide receiver, where he was an offensive threat for the one-time California Interscholastic Federation San Diego Section champion Titans.

Babiash is also a standout basketball player, further demonstrating his premier athleticism.
