Arizona Football: Recapping Rich Rodriguez's first press conference

Ka'Deem Carey and crew get ready for the season-opener against Northern Arizona on Friday - Christian Petersen

Not a lot of news from Arizona Stadium

Since the season opener is finally here, the first weekly Rich Rodriguez press conference happened today.

I wouldn't say a lot of new info came out of it that hasn't already been out there all camp.

With the release of the preliminary depth chart happening right before it, that was a big topic of conversation.  Obviously, who will be the starting quarterback came up over and over, but since B.J. Denker, Javelle Allen and Jesse Scroggins are all listed equally, there is still no official decision.  RichRod even joked that he might make the decision when the bus leaves the hotel Friday night before Wildcat Walk.

It appears Denker will be the guy, based on Rodriguez commenting today that Denker was ahead from the start, and appeared to progress well this week.  That same sentiment happened after a practice last week as well.

Really though, it shouldn't be too big of an issue who's starting the first few weeks.  Ka'Deem Carey, Daniel Jenkins and the rest of the running back stable will most certainly hold down the fort against lower-tier opponents like Northern Arizona, UNLV and UTSA.

The one real conclusion to draw from the depth chart is the fact that there are four total QBs on it, including Nick Isham listed as the primary holder.  That pretty much solidifies that no freshmen QBs will be out there, and it seems like Anu Solomon will redshirt this year.

Notable freshmen on the preliminary depth chart include WR Nate Phillips, and LB Scooby Wright.  RichRod has been high on both of them all camp, and it appears that will translate into significant playing time for both.

On Phillips, Rodriguez commented on his ball skills, speed and confidence.  Confidence is a big key, especially for a freshman.  He'll be returning kicks and punts this year as well as lining up in the slot on offense.

Scooby Wright is just a "football player".  Rodriguez said that he would do anything out there on a football field, and if he was asked to play fullback, he would do it.  The depth chart lists Wright and Keoni Bush-Loo as in a tie for the SLB position, but based on comments from all of camp, expect Wright to be on the field the majority of the time.

The one funny moment from the press conference?  When asked about RichRod's moves in the now-viral video of the team's dance-off last weekend, Terrence Miller said he wished he had coach's moves.  And that Derrick Rainey has the best moves on the team because of his "South Houston Swag".
