Alcorn St. vs. Arizona: Wildcats rout Braves twice in one day

Second verse, same as the first

There's really no other way to put it.  Alcorn St. did not belong on the same field as Arizona this weekend.

The Wildcats rode the momentum of a 20-1 victory in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader to another huge win in game number two, this time 11-1.

Box Score

Tyler Crawford made his third start in just eight days, and went 6 1/3 innings, allowing the only Alcorn St. run on just five hits.  After the game, head coach Andy Lopez said Crawford could have had a complete game, but they wanted to get some other guys in the game since both James Farris and Cody Hamlin had already thrown complete games in the series.

"It was a good, long day," said coach Lopez after the series.  "The guys that pitched did a real good job."

Morgan Earman came on in the 7th inning, and he had some swag out there as he struck out both guys he faced in the inning.  Earman also worked a perfect 8th.

Tyler Parmenter pitched the 9th, and he also had a 1-2-3 inning.  Just the kind of weekend the pitching staff had against the lowly Alcorn State offense.

"They did a good job staying down in the zone and throwing secondary stuff," Lopez continued.  "They just threw a lot of low strikes."

Arizona's offense on the otherhand treated the Braves' pitchers poorly.  Every Wildcat starter plus Bobby Dalbec had at least one hit in Game Two, led by Zach Gibbons and Trent Gilbert picking up three apiece.

Overall, it was just sheer destruction of Alcorn St., which is what they have dealt with all season.  The Braves are now 0-8, having been outscored 104-19 in their eight games.

"We still had some situational at-bats that we didn't execute," coach Lopez said.  "But they're headed in the right direction."

After ten stolen bases in Sunday's first game, Arizona added four more, including two from Kevin Newman.  Newman now has eight bags swiped this year.

"You just take advantage of what a club offers you, and we took advantage of the running variable they were offering us today."

The Wildcats are back at it again next weekend when Seton Hall comes to Tucson for a three-game series, which will hopefully start on Friday.
