MLB Draft Results: Tyler Parmenter selected in the 21st round by Cincinnati Reds

Bruce Thorson-US PRESSWIRE

Looks like making the move to pitcher was the right call by Parmenter.

Arizona Wildcats relief pitcher Tyler Parmenter was picked in the 21st round by the Cincinnati Reds. In 2011, Parmenter was drafted in the 15th round by the Tampa Bay Rays.

2014 was Parmenter's first complete year as a pitcher. When he showed up at Arizona in Tucson, he was the backup shortstop to Alex Mejia, and then to Kevin Newman.

Towards the end of the 2013 season, the decision was made to convert Parmenter into a relief pitcher. The righty had never pitched before, so it was kind of a bold move by both Parmenter and the coaching staff.

But it looks like it's going to pan out alright.

Parmenter had never even pitched in high school. But with his 6-2, 197 pound frame, it was apparent early on that he was going to have some zip on his fastball.

Sitting in the mid-90s, Parmenter was easily the hardest-throwing pitcher on the team this season. But in minor league ball, he'll need to develop a better offspeed pitch if he wants to be successful moving forward.

His progression throughout the year was pretty obvious with the exception of one horrible outing in Tempe against Arizona State. He finished the Pac-12 season with an ERA of 1.76 and an opposing batting average of .190. He was the only Arizona pitcher to be below 2 and .200 respectively in conference play this year.

Good luck to Tyler as he continues to develop as a pitcher, and hope to see him out there in the late innings of a Major League game sometime in the near future!
