Arizona basketball recruiting: Ivan Rabb could visit unofficially

USA TODAY Sports

The Arizona Wildcats are again attacking the Oakland Soldiers roster for highly-recruited players.

Arizona's success in riding the recent wave of top-level recruits out of the Oakland area is well-chronicled. From Nick Johnson and Josiah Turner, to Brandon Ashley, Aaron Gordon and most recently Stanley Johnson, the Oakland Soldiers AAU team has been a hotbed for talent -- talent Sean Miller wants and gets.

It's unlikely to change in 2015 and beyond.

Arizona remains the thick of things regarding top-3 forward Ivan Rabb, a rail-thin but highly-talented 6'9 player from Bishop O'Dowd High School in the Bay Area. Rabb, who plays for the Soldiers, told CBS Sports' Jeff Borzello on Friday that he's still in the beginning stages of feeling out his recruitment, but he said Arizona and Georgetown were two likely places he'd take unofficial visits.

More good news here for the Wildcats: Rabb has seemingly enjoyed sharing space in the middle on his AAU team with center and fellow Arizona recruit Stephen Zimmerman, the 7-footer who is a top-5 prospect in the 2015 class.

"It makes the game a lot easier," Rabb said of Zimmerman. "It takes the attention off me. And plus, I'm not the biggest guy, so I don't have to guard the center. I can guard out on the wings, I can guard the power forward. It makes my job a lot easier. And he's also a pretty good shooter, so he stretches the floor when I'm trying to post up."

After the 2014-15 season, it's likely Brandon Ashley will be gone, and possible Kaleb Tarczewski leaves for the NBA as well. Craig Victor and Dusan Ristic would be the next players up, but nothing is certain -- if Miller wants to go two deep, a Rabb-Zimmerman duo would be nice regardless of who's starting. Neither of the Oakland Soldiers big men are too deep into making their college decision at this point, but Zimmerman did visit the Wildcats in December and liked what he saw.

Zimmerman cut his list to eight schools officially at the end of April and included Arizona in a group with Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, North Carolina, UCLA and UNLV.

Arizona already has one committed player in 2015, a top-10 overall player and shooting guard Tyler Dorsey out of St. John Bosco High School in Los Angeles.

May Sean Miller's California dreaming continue to be the reality.
