Real Coach Miller fans?
OK - here we go! To all of you 'Zona fans...
Any of you that claim to be true Coach Miller fans watching the "Fish That Saved Pittsburgh" on NBA TV tonight? Look for 'coach' standing in line for the open team tryout dribbling multiple basketballs. The 'first Coach Miller' (Sean's dad) used to bring him to a lot of the same camps that I went to as a kid. We were all more impressed by his cameo in the movie! ... :)
Bet you guys didn't know about his fame as an actor? You might have to wait until the credits to verify the story! LOL!
Rock it Sean!!!
Shelton Takes Over At Fiesta Bowl
University of Arizona president has agreed to take John Junker's position at the Fiesta Bowl. While Junker was president and CEO, Shelton's title will be Executive Director. His compensation will be less than Junkers but essentially similar to what he made as president of the University of Arizona (and without the hassles of dealing with the legislature).
Tyler Gabbert to U of A?
from SportingNews via SBN Kansas City:
Arizona (along with eight other schools) is on the Tyler Gabbert's list of potential destinations. Gabbert was a three star recruit out of a St Louis area high school, and followed his brother (Blaine Gabbert) to Missouri after backing out from a verbal commitment to Nebraska. The younger Gabbert was a redshirt freshman last season. Although in competition for the 2011-12 starting QB job at Missouri following his brother's early departure to the NFL, last year's second string, James Franklin, seemed to be solidifying his hold as lead candidate for signal-calling duty in the fall.
Williams Declares?
Well according to this "report", Derrick Williams is going to declare for the 2011 Draft. What I found interesting about this article is how they claim to have sources with this information, yet later in the article, state that they know Williams has made no comments and has been very hush-hush. They even state they did not talk to him.
I have my doubts that this "article" has any source, or any validity. These people need to go take a class in journalism or something. Geez.
Anyway, I am going to flat out say it - I HAVE NO SOURCE. Yet, I will predict with certainty that Williams does declare. He might as well come out and say it. It is inevitable. Nobody passes up being the number 1 pick [or even top 5]. Just doesn't happen.
Derrick Williams Snubbed
Derrick Williams was named to the AP All-America Second Team, getting beaten out by Jared Sullinger and JaJuan Johnson.
I don't have any problem with the Sullinger selection. He is a fantastic player and dominated the Big 10. I do take issue with Johnson over Williams though. Williams was far more efficient and a better all around player than Johnson. I usually loath the "EAST COAST BIAS!!!" excuse but come on! All I can attribute this to is AP writers not staying up late enough to do their jobs and evaluate talent all over the country and not just in the East. Garbage.
Derrick Williams: The Decision
As the Arizona Wildcats arrived back on campus at 11 p.m from their impressive NCAA Tournament campaign, fans filled the McKale Center to welcome back their beloved athletes. Chants of ‘One More Year!’ erupted in McKale as soon as Williams walked in the door. It was rather clear that fans were there to know one thing: Is sophomore star forward, Derrick Williams, returning for one more year at Arizona? Before the tournament Williams, the Pac 10 Player of the Year, was a celebrity. Now, after leading the Wildcats to their first Elite Eight since 2005, Williams is a god. Fans believe this god of the basketball court will be able to lead Arizona back to greatness. But does he want to?
Williams has flown under the radar for much of his collegiate basketball career. In 2009, he was ranked #72 on ESPN's list of top prospects. To put that into perspective, Kyryl Natyazhko was #39. Despite being the former Pac 10 Freshman of the Year, Williams continued to not get much national attention, even though he lead the Wildcats to a Pac-10 best 27-7 regular season record. But a stellar 32-point (25 of which came in the 1st half) performance which helped Arizona blow out #1 seed Duke 93-77 in the Sweet Sixteen, NBA scouts are raving. Derrick Williams has skyrocketed past Perry Jones, Harrison Barnes, Jared Sullinger to become the #2 rated draft prospect on ESPN. He also passed these same players with the addition of Jonas Valanciunas to become #2 on DraftExpress’ list of NBA prospects as well.
After Williams and his teammates left the floor, Derrick returned with Momo Jones, as the crowed was relentless with the ‘One More Year!’ chant. Momo and Williams kept their speeches short, as they thanked their dedicated fans for the support. Although Williams did not make a decision about whether or not he would declare for the NBA Draft, before he waved to the crowd and walked off the floor, he added this: “As of now, I’m still in school.” Could Williams be hinting that he will be returning to Arizona to join his teammates and an elite recruiting class? Sean Miller’s recruiting class features ESPN 2nd highest rated point guard Josiah Turner, Nick Johnson, Sidiki Johnson, and Angelo Chol. Derrick Williams combined with these incoming freshman are sure to make Arizona a preseason top 5 team.
Nobody can be entirely sure whether or not Williams will return, but one thing is for sure: Wherever he goes, Williams will make some fans very happy.

CBS Sports.com Pauses Big Dance Coverage Long Enough to Focus on Wildcat Spring Football
The CBS Sports website, which tends to get ignored in the off season except for the NCAA Tournament, is trying to change that with some spring football coverage that doesn't really tell you anything you won't read in the Tucson papers, but for those who don't live in Southern Arizona and get their sports coverage elsewhere, it's probably a good shorthand of what they already know.
The Story name checks the usual suspect. Scott's rumored red-shirt, the Foles backup situation, etc. etc.
THE LAST 3 MINUTES & OT OF THE PAC-10 CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
Coach Miller has to do a better job of managing this critical part of the game. First of all, the BIGS were in foul trouble and it must have been a plague or incurable disease in the paint because we shot 3 pointer after 3 pointer. Next, were there any emphasis placed on defending the 3 pointer? Up by 3 points with less than 20 seconds left in the game, we should have defended the 3 with our lives, give up the 2 we're still up with free throws to come, a second or 2 off the clock, and 94 feet and a racing clock on their backs. Finally, during this critical time of game we were being punished on the boards. I don't know if Coach Miller has something personal against Jesse Perry or if he's loyal to Jamelle Horne, because we're being slaughtered on the boards with the ineffective Horne on the floor. Derrick Williams can definitely use some help rebounding, Perry provides that relief. Jesse also put the needed pressure on the UW post players with the 4 fouls, Horne on the other hand avoid the paint and settles for the 3 too much. I also wonder if Coach Miller knew that I. Thomas was playing with 4 fouls. If these critical times of the game are not managed more effectively our trip to the BIG DANCE will be cut short.
NCAA Tourney at McKale
This Oregon fan thought that Arizona displayed a lot of great weapons even as Derrick Williams struggled with fouls on Saturday. I think they'll be a tougher out in the tourney than many think. The announcers kept talking about no Wildcat D but every time the Ducks got close, the Cats seemed to stiffen up. Go get 'em and represent he conference well!
Meanwhile, I'm coming to Tucson next week to catch the NCAA tournament. Any expert advice would be appreciated about getting a decent seat. From watching games on TV, it looks like the seats behind the baseline are both obstructed by the hoop and quite a ways back from the court. Should I avoid those? Just trying to find the balance between price and not wanting to watch 6 games from the upper half of the arena.
Thanks,
-Kevin
