Arizona's first commitments include T.J. Johnson, but UA misses on Mario Alford and Brandon Golson

USA TODAY Sports

The Arizona Wildcats' first five commitments included ESPN's 4-star-rated athlete T.J. Johnson.

All recruiting updates are reports from the Arizona Daily Star's Daniel Berk and the Arizona football Twitter feed.

The Arizona Wildcats received their first seven national letters of intent by 8:20 a.m. on Wednesday and the group includes three local products of the state.

The highest-rated of the early commitments was ESPN's 4-star-rated athlete T.J. Johnson.

Other players committed include 4-star athlete T.J. Johnson from Island Coast High School in Cape Coral, Fla., defensive end Calvin Allen of La Cueva High School in Albuquerque, N.M., Basha (Chandler) High School Nate Phillips, 325-pound offensive tackle Jacob Alsadek from Torrey Pines High School in Del Mar, Calif., and Marcos De Niza (Tempe) High School reciever Mauriece Lee.

Grayson High School (Loganville, Ga.) defensive end Jack Banda was the first to commit to the Wildcats on the morning of National Signing Day.

Lee's teammate at Marcos De Niza, Paul Elvira, a 2-star receiver also committed to UA.

The bad news came in the form of the Wildcats missing out on 4-star recruits in athlete Mario Alford and outside linebacker Brandon Golson heading to Rich Rodriguez's former school, West Virginia. Berk has more on the two players from Georgia flipping schools.
