Tra'Mayne Bondurant named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week

Casey Sapio-USA TODAY Sports

The Arizona Wildcats spur Tra'Mayne Bondurant earned the Pac-12's weekly honor after intercepting two passes against NAU and leading the team with seven tackles.

The Arizona Wildcats should take this moment to enjoy it -- the high-octane offense wasn't the story of Friday's 35-0 win against the NAU Lumberjacks. The shutout led way to Tra'Mayne Bondurant being named the Week 1 Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week after a two-interception, seven-tackle performance from his spur position.

Bondurant came on strong once he began earning playing time two years ago under interim head coach Tim Kish, and he hasn't looked back. By far, the safety's best attribute from a roving position has been making plays at the line of scrimmage, but on Friday he showed the ability to drop into coverage quite well -- one of his interceptions turned into a 23-yard pick-six that set the tone for Arizona's second half.

Bondurant wasn't alone. Arguably, freshman linebacker Scooby Wright was No. 1A in terms of who had a good game, though he didn't have the statistics to show how impressive he really was in his first game.

Paul Richardson of Colorado earned the offensive player of the week honors after catching 10 passes for 208 yards in a victory against Colorado State. Special teams winner Vincenzo D'Amato accounted for 18 points for the California Golden Bears and even threw a touchdown pass on a fake.
