Sweep City

The Arizona Wildcats fell 10-5 on Sunday, losing all three games this past weekend to the No. 4 ranked Georgia Bulldogs.

The Cats lost 11-5 on Friday with Preston Guilmet taking the L. He gave up 5 ER on 7 hits in 4 2/3 innings. Arizona battled throughout the game but Georgia put it away with 4 runs in the top of the 8th inning.

The Cats lost on Saturday in a game where Georgia had 21 hits. The final score was 12-5. The Bulldogs jumped on the Cats early with a 4-0 lead after three and extended it to a 10-0 lead by the 7th inning. Matt Veltmann gave up 7 ER on 10 hits in 3 innings for the loss. The Cats were never in this one.

The Bulldogs completed the sweep yesterday putting the Cats away 10-5.  Donn Roach had a brutal day only going 2 innings and giving up 6 earned runs on 7 hits and walking 2. Georgia was already up 7 to 0 by the middle of the 2nd inning. The Cats rallied back here and there but it wasn't even close to enough.

Tough draw for the Cats to play a hot 7-0 Bulldogs team this past week. I am a believer that these types of series are necessary for young teams to get better. Maybe it will light a fire for this week's practice or bring down some cockiness in the locker room after our hot start. There is always room for improvement, and it definitely lies in the pitching department.  The Dawgs scored 33 runs in 3 games. It's tough for ANYONE to overcome that type of production. Well, live and learn (and hopefully get better).

Quote from coach Lopez regarding the series:

"I told them to sit back. There are 56 games left. It is not a sprint to the finish. It's not like you go, 'Oh boy, we had a tough weekend.' I told them, 'Don't panic, please.' "
