Pac-12 power rankings, Week 7: Wildcats dip, dip, dive

Even though they had a bye week, the Arizona Wildcats are falling down the Pac-12 power rankings heading into a game against the USC Trojans.

Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

1. Oregon

Last week: Oregon 57, Colorado 16

Trending: --

As the always-positive Rick Neuheisel tends to say, "don't give up on Colorado." The Buffs put some early points up on the Ducks before Mark Helfrich's defense turned the lights off.

2. Stanford

Last week: Stanford 31, Washington 28

Trending: --

Who wants to bet that Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott phoned in to the referee's review booth in the slim win against Washington? He likely told the ref he had damn well reverse the fourth-down conversion by UW quarterback Keith Price in the final minutes. Got to keep Oregon and Stanford perfect for that natty game, you know.

3. UCLA

Last week: UCLA 34, Utah 27

Trending: --

In a very Stanford-esque type of way, UCLA figured out how to win on the road against a Utah Utes team that didn't look all that bad. They're the favorites in the Pac-12 South, by far.

4. Washington

Last week: Stanford 31, Washington 28

Washington has done nothing wrong and nothing to paint them as illegitimate. But alas, the Pac-12 officiating did something screwy in the finals minutes to take away what might have been a game-winning or game-tying drive against the Cardinal.

5. ASU

Last week: Notre Dame 37, Arizona State 34

Trending: --

After whipping USC, it was odd that the Sun Devils struggled in many phases against a Notre Dame team that has been hot and cold this year. Despite the loss, ASU is still set in the top-five of the league.

6. Utah

Last week: UCLA 34, Utah 27

Trending: ^^^

Utah's defense is no joke and its offense is gaining steam. Though the Utes didn't pull off a win against the Bruins this week, they put a huge scare into Jim Mora's squad. Call this week The Week of Almosts.

7. Washington State

Last week: Washington State 44, Cal 22

Trending: Up

Mike Leach got the best of his former protege Sonny Dykes. The win for the Cougars might've said less than the loss for the Golden Bears, but WSU is 4-2. Things are looking up in Pullman.

8. Oregon State

Last week: Bye

Offensive line health has been an issue for the Beavs. Finally, they should be ready to get some reinforcements for a Week 7 battle against Oregon State.

9. Arizona

Last week: Bye

Uh, oh. That whole having a quarterback thing is turning out poorly. I prematurely have dropped the Wildcats from sixth to ninth after the UW loss and during the bye. The bad news is that I have the angry Ed Orgeron-led Trojans  at 10th before they play Arizona this Thursday. UA could fall again next week -- or could hang tight if WSU, OSU or Utah looks especially bad.

10. USC

USC fired a head coach from my last power rankings post. But you know, they still have talent.

11. Cal

It's official. The rebuilding project for former UA offensive coordinator is very, very real.

12. Colorado

Hard to move up from the bottom when you play the best team in the Pac-12. Don't give up on Colorado! But seriously, at this rate, the Buffs might be able to give Arizona a good game.
