The Arizona fan's rooting guide to the 2016 Kentucky Derby

Will we get another American Pharoah to get behind this year?

2015 was a historic year in horse racing, and Arizona fans had an interesting tie-in to it. American Pharoah won the Triple Crown (and later horse racing's grand slam with the Breeder's Cup Classic), and was trained by University of Arizona alum Bob Baffert.

Baffert was then honored during last year's football game against Utah.

The quest for another Triple Crown winner begins Saturday at the Kentucky Derby. Post time is set for 3:34 PM PT, and you can watch on NBC or stream it on NBC Sports Live Extra.

So who should Arizona fans be rooting for? That's what we're here for. These are the horses trained by both Baffert and Todd Pletcher, who also went to U of A:

  • Destin - Post position 9 - 15-1 odds (Pletcher)
  • Outwork - Post position 15 - 15-1 odds (Pletcher)
  • Mor Spirit - Post position 17 - 12-1 odds (Baffert)

No horse has ever won the Kentucky Derby from post 17, which seems to be bad news for Baffert repeating this year.

Per KentuckyDerby.com, here are the jockey silks that you should be keeping an eye on as well, just to make this easier on everyone.

So there you have it. We are rooting for three horses this year. If you see anything interesting from Derby Day, like Gronk wearing something like this, feel free to share it in the comments below!
