The Pirates selected Flynn in the sixth round of the MLB Draft last week. He signed for $250,000, according to MLB Pipeline’s Jim Callis. That is slightly below slot value, which was $275,600, per MLB.com.
Flynn was Arizona’s No. 2 starter this past season. He posted a 4.89 ERA in 73.2 innings, with 72 strikeouts to 29 walks.
The Wildcats are also expected to lose ace Cody Deason, a junior who was selected by the Astros in the fifth round, so they will have plenty of questions to answer on the mound next season.
Deason went 6-5 with a 2.87 ERA in 2018. He struck out 84 batters in 91 innings.
“I enjoyed all my years at Arizona and I’m very grateful for my coaches speeding my development,” Deason told the VC Star. “But it’s time. I’m looking forward to the next challenge and getting started as a professional.”
