Arizona’s bullpen, a surprising strength of this year’s team, will be without two of its top weapons this weekend for the Super Regionals of the NCAA Baseball Tournament.

Michael Lev of the Arizona Daily Star is reporting that left-hander relievers Randy Abshier and Gil Luna have been placed on interim suspension by the UA’s Dean of Students due to a “recent off-campus incident involving other university students.” Neither will be available for Friday’s 6 p.m. PT opener against Ole Miss, and their status beyond that is uncertain.

Both pitched in Arizona’s regional final win over UC Santa Barbara on Sunday. Abshier, a third-year sophomore, is 4-0 with a 2.91 ERA while Luna, a fourth-year junior, is 1-0 and leads the Wildcats with a 1.69 ERA.

The absence of Abshier and Luna leaves Arizona with only two left-handers out of the bullpen: freshman Riley Cooper, who leads the team with 27 appearances, and junior Ian Churchill, who has appeared in only one game in the past two months.
