Joseph Blair named head coach of G-League’s Rio Grande Valley Vipers

Joseph Blair has been named the head coach of the NBA G-League’s Rio Grande Valley Vipers, the team announced today.

Blair, who played for the Arizona Wildcats from 1992-96, has served as a Vipers assistant since 2015. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity in an Instagram post.

“Extremely honored to announce that I will officially begin another chapter of my life, as the Head Coach for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers,” Blair wrote. “Thanks to everyone who has said prayers, supported me, guided me, and believed in me. You are appreciated more than my words could ever articulate! Thank you to both the Houston Rockets and the Vipers organizations for having faith in me to guide the team, and players in a positive direction. I am humbled by this opportunity and blessed beyond measure!!”

During Blair’s tenure with Arizona he averaged 10.4 points and 6.5 rebounds per game as a center. He started on Arizona’s 1994 Final Four squad.

Blair was drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 1996 NBA Draft but never suited up for a regular season game in the league. He bounced around various overseas professional leagues from 1996-2009.

After Blair’s professional playing career on the hardwood came to an end, he returned to Arizona as a an undergraduate assistant, than a graduate manager from 2013-15.
