Devonaire Doutrive signed with the Arizona Wildcats on Wednesday, becoming UA’s first 2018 signee, per Bruce Pascoe of the Arizona Daily Star.
The 6-foot-5 guard from Van Nuys, California is the No. 83 player in his class, according to 247Sports composite rankings.
Doutrive, a standout at Birmingham High School, is expected to add scoring, playmaking, and athleticism on the wing, and may see some action at point guard which is a position of need for the Wildcats.
Even with Doutrive in the fold, Arizona still has plenty of work to do this offseason. The Wildcats have six open scholarship slots left to fill and have another assistant coach to hire to fill the opening left by Book Richardson. They hired Danny Peters on Tuesday to fill Lorenzo Romar’s vacancy.
But signing Doutrive is a start, and other dominos will surely follow.
The Wildcats are hosting former UConn signees James Akinjo and Lukas Kisunas within the next two weeks, according to reports.
Akinjo is a four-star point guard from Richmond, California. Kisunas is a three-star big man from Lithuania. Both were released from their National Letters of Intent when Kevin Ollie was fired in March.
Arizona has also been linked to several graduate transfers, who can be one-year stopgaps.
The Wildcats also continue to pursue former commit Brandon Williams.
He and Shareef O’Neal signed with Arizona back in November, but they inked non-binding financial aid paperwork that allowed them to renege if Arizona’s involvement in the FBI’s investigation into college basketball escalated.
Those two exercised that option shortly after ESPN’s Sean Miller wiretap report broke in late February.
O’Neal committed to play for the UCLA Bruins, while Williams is back on the open market, drawing interest from Arizona along with schools like Oregon, Gonzaga, and Arizona State.
It’s not clear if Doutrive signed binding or non-binding paperwork, but based on this photo it does appear to be a traditional National Letter of Intent, which is a legally binding contract.
