Johnson was originally drafted with the 42nd pick by the Houston Rockets in 2014, but was traded to the Denver Nuggets in 2015.

The Nuggets released him and the Austin Spurs picked him up on December 28, 2015. He played 34 games and averaged 10 points per game before he was waived.

The Orlando Magic briefly signed him, but released him shortly after.

He then played one season with the German team, Bayern Munich, before the Spurs picked him up again.
