Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo thinks Suns should pick Deandre Ayton

Lovullo is a UCLA Bruin, so he knows what Ayton is capable of

Nearly all the NBA Draft experts out there believe the Phoenix Suns will — or at least should — select Deandre Ayton with the No. 1 pick on June 21.

It turns out baseball experts even think that, too.

Arizoan Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Sunday that Ayton would be his choice if he were running the Suns.

“They gotta go the best player, the kid from the University of Arizona,” Lovullo said. (via azcentral).

What does the 2017 National League Manager of the Year know about Ayton or basketball? Well, Lovullo is a UCLA alumnus, so he watched Ayton dominate the Pac-12 all last season.

And in two games against Lovullo’s Bruins, Ayton averaged 24 points and 13 rebounds per game. That includes arguably the best game of Ayton’s career, when he had 32 points and 14 rebounds on 16 shots in the Pac-12 Tournament semifinals.

So, Lovullo is sold.

“I saw him torch the Pac-12,” he said. “Hard to believe a freshman is that big. He’s a total game-changer.”
