Arizona Wildcats receiver Trey Griffey joined me for a good chunk of time last week, and had a lot of interesting things to say, including how the return game will get better in 2015.
Here are a few other things he offered up as the season still looms about two weeks away.
Is it easier going through practice with a returning quarterback?
Griffey: Yeah, it's a little easier as far as you really know what he can do and he knows what you can do. I mean it's just basically a lot better than coming in with a new quarterback or anything, so it's going to help us out in the long run. It's crazy because all three quarterbacks bring something to the table. They're not all just great in one category. They're learning from each other, we're learning from them, and it's all a learning experience during camp.
Is there a true freshman that's standing out at wide receiver?
There is, but all the freshmen are doing something. They're learning everything, and it's harder on them to learn the stuff, and then go to practice to do it. We've seen it for a couple years, so that's our advantage (as upperclassmen). Shun (Brown)'s doing great, but so is everybody. All the freshman receivers that have come in are ahead of where I came in. I came in with Clive Georges and Jarrell Bennett, and we weren't really quite prepared. But these freshmen have come in, taken the bull by the horns, and are learning really quick.
Is that because of the new summer workout rules where they can spend time with coaches?
That helps out a lot, honestly. Just as far as conditioning-wise, being able to find out the scheme, and it's our advantage as the upper classmen to help out the freshmen as far as learning the schemes and how the coach wants it. When we come into camp, we hit the ground running. There's no first day, second day we're going to do this, we're going to do that. We're going right into it and we're showing the coaches what we can do.
What are you doing in your free time?
Just watch TV. Me and my sister just hang out, we'll play Madden, we'll play NBA2K, just anything to get our minds off of schoolwork and athletics. I really just watch whatever she wants to watch. Usually I just fall asleep.
