The Arizona Wildcats will have two new punters for the 2019 season, as Desert Ridge High School (Mesa, Ariz.) punter Cameron Weinberg announced his commitment to the UA on Saturday morning via social media.
He made it to campus for the Territorial Cup and was offered a spot as a preferred walk-on.
I would like to announce my verbally commitment to UofA. The coaching staff brings great energy and makes it feel like another home for me. Lastly I would like to thank God for giving me this opportunity and everyone around me that has guided me through this process. #BearDown pic.twitter.com/mskkb2k3Mb— Cameron Weinberg (@CameronWeinberg) December 15, 2018
Kohl’s Kicking tabs Weinberg as a 5-star prospect, ranking him 27th in the nation. He was named American Family Insurance ALL-USA Arizona Preseason 1st team high school punter for 2018. Kohl’s had this to say about Weinberg.
Weinberg had an excellent showing at the 2018 National Scholarship Camp. His leg strength has improved and the consistency of his drop has become impressive. He has great command of his catch/mold and his drop and is hitting with a high level of confidence. He showed impressive refinement in his roll-out punts and was able to score points on them at camp as well. Weinberg charted several 50+ yard punts with over 4.2 seconds of hang time and his big ball at camp was a 44 yard 4.69 second punt. Weinberg attended the winter Showcase Camp in December of 2017. He was impressive during the charting portion of camp with multiple 50+ yard punts. He needs to continue to work on his trajectory to gain more hang time to his impressive distances.
Weinberg averaged 38.4 yards a punt during his career at Desert Ridge. During his senior campaign, he booted 52 punts for 2061 yards, averaging 39.6 a punt. He pinned 22 of his 52 punts inside the 20.
Arizona is also has a scholarship punter committed to the 2019 recruiting class, Kyle Ostendorp, a 4.5 star prospect according to Chris Sailer. He held a Florida Tech offer and received his Arizona offer back on May 21, committing just a few hours later.
Ostendorp averaged 42.7 yards per punt and finished second in Arizona’s 6A Division. Ostendorp was named First Team All-State punter. Weinberg was seventh with 39.6 yards per punt.
