During the ESPN broadcast of Arizona’s surprising win over Texas Tech on Saturday night, it was mentioned by analyst Rod Gilmore that the Wildcats only had 72 scholarship players on the roster, well below the maximum of 85.
Now that number appears to be 71.
True freshman defensive back Maurice Gaines is no longer listed on the UA’s online roster. Michael Lev of the Arizona Daily Star was the first to report the change.
Freshman DB Maurice Gaines is no longer on the #ArizonaWildcats football roster. It's unclear why he's no longer with the team. Gaines was part of the 2019 recruiting class. Hadn't generated much buzz during training camp.— Michael Lev (@MichaelJLev) September 20, 2019
Gaines, a 3-star prospect from California, was one of the lower-rated members of Arizona’s 2019 recruiting class. He did not appear in any of the Wildcats’ first three games, one of just two scholarship true freshmen that hadn’t made an appearance.
Arizona’s 2019 class, which was ranked 54th nationally, is down to 19 active players. Kane Bradford, a 3-star defensive tackle from Dallas, never joined the program.
