Few of Arizona’s players are as closely linked to Kevin Sumlin as is Robert Congel. And with the the Wildcats firing Sumlin on Saturday, it should come as no surprise that Congel will be following him out the door.
Matt Zenitz of AL.com is reporting that Congel has entered the NCAA transfer portal, the third UA player to reportedly leave the program on Wednesday. Sophomore quarterback Grant Gunnell and sophomore wide receiver Boobie Curry also plan to transfer.
Congel, a redshirt junior, started 13 games for Arizona including all five in 2020 at right guard. He sat out the 2018 season after transferring from Texas A&M, where he appeared in five games for Sumlin as a true freshman in 2017.
Arizona has seen four players leave the program since Sumlin’s firing on Saturday, five since the beginning of December. Redshirt junior wide receiver Stanley Berryhill III announced his transfer on Monday, while redshirt freshman offensive lineman Jamari Williams departed prior to the season-ending loss to ASU.
