The Arizona Wildcats’ coaching search could come to an end Tuesday, according to Jon Wilner of The Mercury News, and they reportedly have zeroed in on two candidates—San Jose State head coach Brent Brennan and New England Patriots quarterback coach Jedd Fisch.
Wilner is also reporting that Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo interviewed for the job, but is no longer in consideration.
Decent chance #BearDown hires a coach today. Niumatalolo interviewed but is out; Brennan and Fisch left, per sources. Will AD Dave Heeke make the hire, or will prez Bobby Robbins force the issue?— Jon Wilner (@wilnerhotline) December 22, 2020
Brennan, 47, has led the Spartans to a 7-0 record this season, winning the Mountain West Conference title for the first time in school history while earning MWC Coach of the Year honors.
In four seasons with the Spartans, Brennan has a 15-29 record, though after starting 7-29 he’s won eight consecutive games. Prior to that he was an assistant coach for six years at Oregon State, and from 2005-09 he was on San Jose State’s staff.
Brennan was a graduate assistant at Arizona in 2000 under Dick Tomey and later coached under him at San Jose State. Brennan considers Tomey one of the most influential people in his coaching career and spoke at his funeral.
Fisch, 44, has more than 20 years of experience as an assistant coach at the college and professional level. This was his first season with the Patriots, having spent 2018-19 with the Los Angeles Rams as an analyst and assistant offensive coordinator.
From 2015-17 Fisch was in the college ranks, serving as Michigan’s QB and wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator for two years before going to UCLA in 2018. With the Bruins he was QB coach and offensive coordinator, serving as interim head coach for the final two games following Jim Mora’s firing.
UCLA went 1-1 under Fisch, beating Cal in the regular-season finale before losing to Kansas State in the 2017 Cactus Bowl.
Dating back to 1999, when he was a graduate assistant at his alma mater Florida under Steve Spurrier, Fisch has worked for five college programs and seven NFL teams in 22 years.
