The Arizona Wildcats finished filling out their offensive staff on Monday and now they are wrapping up their defensive staff. The UA will hire DeWayne Walker as its new cornerbacks coach, according to Football Scoop.
Walker was out of coaching this season, but has 12 years of college coaching experience and 14 years of NFL coaching experience. He most recently was the defensive backs coach for the Cleveland Browns (2017-2019) and Jacksonville Jaguars (2013-2016).
Before that he was the head coach at New Mexico State, where he posted a 10-40 record in four seasons. Walker has also coached at USC, UCLA, Cal, Oklahoma State, BYU and Utah State, so he should have plenty of West Coast ties. He was born in Los Angeles and went to high school in Pasadena, California.
The 60-year-old was UCLA’s defensive coordinator from 2006 to 2008 and Oklahoma State’s defensive coordinator in 1995.
Football Scoop is reporting that Chuck Cecil, who Arizona named as its new “defensive backs coach,” will coach the safeties.
Assuming the Walker hire becomes official, this is what UA’s staff currently looks like:
- HC: Jedd Fisch
- OC/OL: Brennan Carroll
- RBs: Scottie Graham
- WRs: Kevin Cummings
- TEs: Jordan Paopao
- DBs: Chuck Cecil
- DL: Ricky Hunley
- QBs: Jimmie Dougherty
- CBs: DeWayne Walker
Three more assistant coaching vacancies remain. Two will be filled for a new defensive coordinator and special teams coach.
