Alex VanSumeren, a class of 2022 four-star defensive tackle out of Essexville, Mich. has included Arizona among his list of 10 schools.
I’ve been Blessed with many amazing opportunities and I truly appreciate all of the remarkable coaches and staff that shared their time and knowledge with me the past several months . . . Arizona faces steep competition to land VanSumeren, a top-200 recruit according to 247Sports Composite rankings.
The 6-foot-3 prospect from Garber High School is also considering college football heavyweights Alabama, Clemson, Oregon and Penn State among others. VanSumeren is considered the No. 193 recruit nationally per 247 Sports Composite including the No. 16 defensive tackle and No. 4 recruit in Michigan.
A one-time Michigan commit, VanSumeren reopened his recruitment in February shortly after his brother Ben, a junior inside linebacker for the Wolverines, announced he was transferring out of Ann Arbor.
Ben soon committed to Michigan State. It’s worth noting the Spartans are listed among Alex’s 10 schools while Michigan is not.
Arizona’s involvement with VanSumeren is likely tied to defensive coordinator Don Brown, who held the same position at Michigan from 2016-2020 before being fired at the end of last season.
Brown was hired to Jedd Fisch’s staff less than four weeks after being dismissed by Michigan.
Whether Arizona can reel in VanSumeren or not, the fact the Wildcats are in the hunt for another premier out-of-state recruit hints at the UA’s recruiting potential under Fisch and his staff.
The Wildcats currently have six commits for the 2022 class, all three-stars.
