One of the biggest pickups Arizona made from the NCAA transfer portal is not coming after all.

Treshaun Hayward, a graduate transfer linebacker from Western Michigan, is no longer joining the program for the 2021 season, according to Michael Lev of the Arizona Daily Star.

The 2019 Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Hayward signed with the UA in February and was set to join the team in June with the remainder of Arizona’s newcomers. Instead he and the school have parted ways, per Lev.

Linebacker is a position of major need for the Wildcats, who during spring practice only had senior Anthony Pandy, redshirt sophomore Issaiah Johnson and freshman DJ Mourning available among scholarship players. The UA has at least six linebackers coming in this summer, including three transfers.

Jerry Roberts, who started 16 games for Bowling Green in 2019-20, signed in February, while this month the UA has gotten commitments from Vanderbilt senior Kenny Hebert and Wisconsin freshman Malik Reed.
