That's two portal pickups on Monday

The Arizona Wildcats finished their excellent regular season two weeks ago with a blowout win against rival Arizona State. A week ago, Arizona found out they’ll play Oklahoma in the Alamo Bowl. All good news from on-the-field events.

Off-the-field, recruiting is picking up, especially with the Transfer Portal. With that comes many comings and goings of players and plenty of bad news as impactful players chose to go elsewhere. The news Arizona received Monday, however, was very good.

Former UC Davis defensive lineman Chubba Maae announced his decision to commit to the Arizona Wildcats, making him the second pickup from the NCAA transfer portal.

Maae fills an immediate need along the Wildcat defensive line. With big nose tackle Sio Nofoagatoto’a out of eligibility, and the status of Bill Norton unknown at this point, Maae will come in and fill that big run-stopper role. And he is quite the load, measuring in at 6-foot-2 and 350 pounds. That’s a big body plugging up the middle.

Maae had a successful and impactful career in Davis, California. He earned Big Sky Conference Co-Freshman of the Year (2021), All-Big Sky Third Team (2022), and All-Big Sky Second Team (2021 & 2023) honors during his time with the Aggies. In 36 games, he racked up 59 tackles, 8 TFL, 2 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries, and a blocked extra point.

Since entering the portal at the end of November, Maae reported offers from Arizona, Baylor and Houston. He took an official visit to Tucson this weekend and saw all he needed to see to pull the trigger in favor of the Wildcats.

He is the second transfer to announce for Arizona this cycle, following ex-Indiana cornerback Jordan Shaw.
