The Arizona GymCats have a lot of seniors on the roster this year. All will be important contributors. When it comes to the Pac-12 preseason watch lists, though, it’s junior Alysen Fears and freshman Abigayle Martin who Pac-12 coaches think will have big impacts. Fears was named to the 2024 Pac-12 women’s gymnastics watch list and Martin landed on the 2024 Pac-12 women’s gymnastics newcomer watch list on Monday.

Fears is expected to be an all-arounder this year, joining fifth-year senior Malia Hargrove on all four rotations. What’s more, she might be anchoring both balance beam and bars. Last season, Fears was largely limited to those two events due to an injury she suffered in the preseason showcase. She added vault and floor exercise back to her repertoire later in the season and that should continue this season.

A former Level 10 national champion on bars, Fears posted a personal best of 9.925 on the event in three straight meets last season. She posted career highs on beam (9.875) and floor exercise (9.900) at the Denver regional. She has a career high of 9.800 on vault and 39.350 in all-around.

Martin is the highest-rated gymnast in Arizona’s incoming freshman class according to College Gym News. The four-star recruit from Texas is a two-time national qualifier who placed fifth at last year’s Nastia Liukin Cup. In 2021, she was a Level 10 national champion on balance beam and placed fourth in the all-around at nationals.

Both watch lists were voted on by the coaches of the eight schools that sponsor women’s gymnastics.
