The Wildcats have their first 2017 commitment on the board

Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports

Sean Miller and the Arizona Wildcats have secured their first commitment for the 2017 class.

In-state guard Alex Barcello of Corona Del Sol High School in Tempe announced his commitment on Friday afternoon.

Barcello, the 80th ranked player in the country, and the state’s top player per 247Sports, was named Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year in 2014-15. That year, as a sophomore, he averaged 20 points, five rebounds, and four assists per game while leading the team to a 33-1 record and a state title.

At 6-foot-3, 175 pounds, Barcello will primarily play the point guard position, though he does have a good enough jump shot to play off the ball. The Arizona native played in the most recent Nike EYBL league, averaging 19 points on 45 percent shooting (37 percent from three) in 16 games

The guard explained his decision to commit to Arizona to Scout.com’s Evan Daniels:

Barcello had announced his final five schools of Arizona, Virginia, Butler, Indiana, and Stanford on August 4. He had already gone on official visits to Butler and Stanford before taking in a visit to Arizona.

The Corona Del Sol prospect is the first of what many expect to be another top-tier recruiting class for Arizona; one that could hold as many as six players.
