Arizona football recruiting SitRep: Camp season is officially here

Arizona hosted a bevy of prospects this past weekend

The Spring Evaluation period is now officially over and the Arizona Wildcats staff has started its transition into the summer quiet period. That means plenty of visitors and summer camps. U of A hosted its first two camps of the season and had plenty of recruits on campus.

With that, let’s dive into this week’s SitRep.

Dereck Boles

On Friday our friends over at The Daily Stampede (USF’s SB Nation site) reported that Arizona DT commit Dereck Boles flipped to USF. Over the weekend it was confirmed by multiple outlets and sources.

It was a pretty low-key decommitment as I wasn’t tracking it until Saturday morning or so. To be honest, it doesn’t come as a shock. Boles was committed to Florida International before his visit to Arizona earlier this spring. He then flipped to the ‘Cats shortly after the visit.

I cannot say for sure what the cause of the flip is, but it is possible that he wants to play closer to home (Boles is originally from Lakeland, FL). If Arizona is able to land Keiti Iakopo (see recruiting notes below), it will lessen the sting of Boles’ flip.

Recruiting Notes

  • New DT offeree Keiti Iakopo told Scout.com that he is able to leave junior college this year since he was a full qualifier out of high school. He is looking at making a decision soon and with Arizona being his bigger offer, it is possible he could be Tucson-bound.
  • On Thursday, 3-star DT Cam Goode from St. John’s College HS (Washington, D.C.) released a Top 8 of Arizona, Temple, Virginia Tech, Rutgers, Michigan State, Pittsburgh, Indiana, and Virginia. The Wildcats have done really well with this recruitment, even with the distance. The ‘Cats have done so well in fact that Goode told Scout that Arizona will get an official visit. Virginia Tech is a school that has done well with Goode too, with him visiting a few times already. Getting Goode on campus will go a long way for the Wildcats. This is a recruitment to watch closely.
  • Kievan Myers (3-star OT from Bishop Dunne HS in Dallas, TX) released a Top 15 that included Arizona, Washington, Colorado, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Ohio State, and Utah amongst others. It will be a tough haul for the Wildcats but the fact that they survived the first cut after only offering about a month ago is a good sign.
