Andre Williams got the Doak Award, but nothing that got him there showed against the Arizona Wildcats' stout defense.

Arizona running back Ka'Deem Carey outplayed Andre Williams in a 2013 AdvoCare V100 Bowl blowout of the Boston College Eagles, and Arizona's complaints about snubs were validated in the 42-19 win. But to throw aside the production for Carey and Williams this season isn't fair to either player.

It is fair to say that the outcome on Tuesday in Shreveport, La., said a lot about the two teams and the conferences they play within. The talent gap between the two teams showed in the individual numbers by Carey and Williams.

Arizona's junior took 28 carries for 165 yards (5.9 yards per carry) and two touchdowns, but Williams could only muster 75 yards on 29 yards, a 2.9 per carry average.

The Wildcats, with their small -- for a Pac-12 school -- defense stuffed Williams at the line of scrimmage time and time again. Rarely did Williams run through contact, and never did he show any sort of speed that the Doak Walker Award voters especially might have seen in ACC play.

Overall, it was Arizona looking far and away like the more athletic team.

UA receivers, short as they are, out-jumped BC defensive backs or drew penalties on jump balls. Nate Phillips set an Arizona postseason record with 194 yards on nine catches. The freshman caught two balls for 79 yards on a four-play, 92-yard drive to put Arizona ahead 7-0.

Boston College answered with two field goals after stuttering in the red zone before UA safety William Parks, who in Pac-12 play appeared slow afoot, raced for a 69-yard pick-six for a 14-6 lead with seven minutes left in the first half. Simply put, the talent gap showed.

Early on, it was a struggling RichRod attack against an offense trying to slow things down -- but the Eagles couldn't even get the run game going. Despite a first half where the offense lost the time of possession battle 22 minutes to eight, the Wildcats seemed set on rotating its defensive players to stay fresh.

And just as it seemed Williams began to break down the wall of Arizona defense, he limped off the field. That, and a quick-hit drive by the Wildcats ending with a Trey Griffey touchdown catch off a double-move, hinted the game was just about to get out of hand for the Eagles.

Despite two first-half turnovers -- a Carey fumble on the first Arizona possession and a muffed punt by Phillips -- the Wildcats were sitting pretty behind a physical defense that wasn't allowing Williams to do much other than plow forward for two yards here and three yards there.

Once Arizona began to read the play-action plays by BC quarterback Chase Rettig, the blowout was on.

The second half started with a quick drive led by Denker targeting his freshmen receivers, and it ended with a Carey touchdown run. The next possession went to Carey early before Denker finished off the drive with a 14-yard run. All five of Arizona's scoring drives took less than three minutes.

What did it all mean? Despite their easy nonconference slate, the Wildcats -- like every other Pac-12 school -- had few easy games in conference play. It was further proof of the value in playing ranked teams for much of the season.

The receiver depth of Phillips and Griffey, who recorded his first two touchdown catches of the year, makes next year promising despite so many question-marks at quarterback and receiver. Rich Rodriguez's recruiting still has to show, but against a relatively weaker Boston College team, it's clear Arizona is on the right path.

Although the Wildcats' win said a lot about where they're at as a program, it did just as much -- if not more -- to validate Ka'Deem Carey's season, one that had him appreciated despite his All-American status.

The All-American running back helped the Wildcats stomp the then-No. 5 Oregon Ducks, but his final game with Arizona should be a doozy. Motivation will run strongly through Carey's veins, but it's why that's the fun part heading into Tuesday's matchup.

Boston College is supplying all the motivation, if not unintentionally. Eagles running back Andre Williams led the nation in rushing at 175.2 yards per game, 19.2 more than Arizona's star. But the accolades kept rolling in for Williams. Carey, meanwhile, was snubbed quite a bit.

A shortlist for you to review:

Why Carey was a legitimate Heisman candidate before he finished just 10th in voting

Easily, the offensive and defensive lines will have the underlying roles behind Ka'Deem Carey and Andre Williams. While the two backs can take 40 carries each, the separation between the two offenses -- sans turnovers -- comes down to the passing attacks. These are two very different quarterbacks.

Chase Rettig doesn't have the legs of B.J. Denker, but the rare times he does throw -- BC has the 113th ranked passing offense at 150.5 yards per game -- could be a problem. The Wildcats' defensive backs Jonathan McKnight and Shaq Richardson have been known to jump routes, but the play-action the Eagles use could end with big plays.

On the other side, Denker can keep Boston College on its heels with the zone-option. But will Oregon B.J. Denker show up, or ASU B.J. Denker?

Boston College players to know

Andre Williams: He led the nation in rushing but did have some dips in consistency. It's hard to discount his overall resume in 2013 (2,102 yards on 6.4 yards per carry), but the bigger issue is how well he does coming off a rough outing against Syracuse where he had nine carries for 29 yards -- 26 came on one play -- and left early because of injury.

Alex Amidon: The wideout had 895 yards to account for nearly half of the Eagles' 1,806 passing yards on the season. Let's just say that when quarterback Chase Rettig makes plays, it's likely going to be to Amidon.

Kasim Edebali: The end had 15 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks and three forced fumbles on the year.

Kevin Pierre-Louis: Pierre-Louis was second on BC with 104 tackles behind fellow linebacker Steele Divitto. He was second on the team with 10.5 tackles for loss and six sacks.

The injury, first reported by the Arizona Daily Star's Daniel Berk, casts a shadow over the running back position.

ACL injuries don't make for speedy recoveries. Receiver Austin Hill did in his knee this offseason and seemed like a hopeful to return for the bowl game, but that appeared unrealistic. It didn't help the loony optimism that Arizona kept him included on all injury reports yet never decided to call him a scratch for the year.

So with Baker's injury making him, at best, able to return midseason when he's a junior, there's at least a question of who becomes the key back to start the season -- and likely to finish it.

What? You thought Ka'Deem Carey would be coming back.

Assuming Carey leaves for the NFL, the Wildcats have a big hole to fill. Daniel Jenkins will have exhausted his eligibility and Baker, the third-stringer known for his speed, won't have a chance to fight for his starting spot.

Youngsters will need to step up.

Of Arizona's 27-man freshman class, only two are listed as running backs. Four-star back Nick Wilson out of Fresno, Calif., has the size to be an every-down back. Of the sophomores on the Arizona roster, Pierre Cormier, a four-star prospect in last year's class, could push for snaps after sitting out this season, as could the bigger back of last year's class, 220-pounder Zach Green.

There are of course some athletes whose positions will remain unclear heading into the summer. It's just one of many big decisions Rich Rodriguez must make heading into next season. His recruiting chops will begin to be put under the microscope.

Bondurant thinking NFL

Tra'Mayne Bondurant isn't a likely NFL draft pick, but he surprisingly submitted his NFL draft paperwork to see where he stands, according to Berk. Family issues have Bondurant wondering if he can make the jump after his junior season, but he said that there's a good chance of coming back to Arizona.

At this point, it's a worry that the Wildcats could lose their defensive rock. It's also interesting to wonder how well NFL teams can judge Bondurant, who probably projects as a safety in the pros but plays the up, spur hybrid position.

Trying to predict a football game, and what Ka'Deem Carey and Andre Williams will do.

I asked our friends over at BC Interruption to predict not only the final score of the game, but how many rushing yards Ka'Deem Carey and Andre Williams will rack up as the two top-ten Heisman Trophy vote getters square-off.

I'm going to go with Arizona winning 41-24. Ka'Deem will pick up 205 yards, with Andre Williams getting 162. The difference will be Denker, and I think he'll get to 1,000 yards for the season by getting 120 of his own rushing yards.

Here's a look at how the guys at BC Interruption see things playing out

Grant Salzano:

Zona 31
BC 24

Carey with 170 yards
Williams with 170 yards

Joseph Gravellese:

38-24 Arizona
Carey 173
Williams 164

John Fidler:

Arizona 38 BC 31 - successful first season for the Dazzler ends with a loss.

Daniel Rubin:

Arizona 34
BC 20

Both guys run for 135 yards and 2 TD's. The difference is the play of Arizona's QB over BC's.
