The longest offseason ever continues.

The entire Texas Classic has been cancelled due to inclement weather in Austin, delaying Arizona softball’s 2021 season opener for at least another week.

The Wildcats were supposed to kick off the season Thursday against No. 6 Texas, then face Sam Houston State on Friday and early Saturday afternoon before wrapping up the Texas Classic against No. 8 Alabama on Saturday evening.

Now the Wildcats will have to wait until Friday, Feb. 19 to take the field. They are scheduled to host New Mexico at 5 p.m. MST to kick off the Hillenbrand Invitational in Tucson.

Arizona is also slated to host Seattle and Southern Utah that weekend. Assuming COVID-19 or inclement weather doesn’t get in the way, of course.

The Wildcats have not taken the field since March 10, 2020. They are ranked No. 3 in both major preseason polls, their highest preseason ranking in 10 years.
